Mount Carmel Monastery, Rengdim, is a missionary community of the Regional Vicariate of West Bengal and North-East India under the South Kerala Province of St. Joseph, Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCD). Situated in the State of Meghalaya, the monastery serves as a center of prayer, evangelization, pastoral ministry, and the promotion of Carmelite spirituality.
The Carmelite presence in Meghalaya emerged from the missionary vision of the Vicariate to extend the Gospel and the Carmelite charism to the tribal communities of North-East India. Through collaboration with the local Church, the friars established their presence in Rengdim to provide pastoral care, faith formation, and spiritual accompaniment to the Christian faithful of the region.
Inspired by the teachings of St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the community seeks to foster a life of prayer and service among the people. Through parish ministry, catechesis, youth formation, retreats, and social outreach programs, the friars strive to strengthen the faith of the local communities and promote integral human development.
Over the years, Mount Carmel Monastery has become a beacon of hope and spiritual renewal, serving the Church in Meghalaya through its commitment to prayer, fraternity, and missionary service. The monastery continues to be a place where people encounter Christ and experience the richness of the Carmelite spiritual tradition.
Today, the community remains dedicated to evangelization, pastoral care, education, and the promotion of vocations, contributing to the growth of the Church in the region.
