Takdah Carmel (Gumba Carmel), Darjeeling, West Bengal
History
Takdah Carmel, popularly known as *Gumba Carmel*, is a missionary community of the Regional Vicariate of West Bengal and North-East India under the South Kerala Province of St. Joseph, Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCD). Nestled amidst the scenic hills of Darjeeling, the community serves as a center of prayer, pastoral ministry, and evangelization.
Situated in the culturally rich and diverse region of Takdah, the Carmelite presence seeks to bring the Gospel message and the spiritual heritage of Carmel to the local people. Inspired by the teachings of St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the friars dedicate themselves to fostering a deeper relationship with Christ through prayer, community life, and apostolic service.
The monastery serves the spiritual needs of the faithful through the celebration of the sacraments, catechetical instruction, family ministry, youth formation, and spiritual accompaniment. Through its prayerful presence and pastoral outreach, Takdah Carmel has become a place of faith, hope, and spiritual renewal for the local Christian community.
Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Himalayan foothills, Gumba Carmel continues to witness to the Carmelite ideals of contemplation, fraternity, and mission, contributing to the growth of the Church in the Darjeeling region.
