Carmel of Christ the King, Kolkata, is a monastery of the *Discalced Carmelite Nuns (OCD)* situated at Outram Street in the heart of Kolkata. It is one of the oldest Carmelite monasteries in Eastern India and stands as a living witness to the contemplative tradition of Carmel.
The origins of the monastery can be traced to *1929, when **Monsignor Ferdinand Perier SJ, Archbishop of Calcutta, invited the Carmelite Nuns from Belgium to establish a Carmelite foundation in Kolkata. Responding generously to this invitation, four Carmelite sisters arrived in Calcutta on **12 November 1935* and began the first Carmelite monastery in the city.
Soon afterwards, a historic residence at *4, Outram Street* was acquired and adapted for monastic life. Since then, the monastery has remained a place of prayer, silence, and contemplation amidst the bustling city of Kolkata. For decades, the Carmelite Nuns have dedicated their lives to intercessory prayer for the Church, the nation, priests, religious, families, and all those who seek God’s grace.
Following the spirit of *St. Teresa of Avila* and *St. John of the Cross*, the sisters embrace a life centered on the Eucharist, the Liturgy of the Hours, silent prayer, community life, and sacrifice. Hidden from public life, their contemplative vocation continues to support the evangelizing mission of the Church through a powerful ministry of prayer.
Today, Carmel of Christ the King remains a spiritual oasis in Kolkata, welcoming the faithful to its chapel and encouraging all who visit to deepen their relationship with God through prayer and contemplation.
