St. Teresa’s Monastery, Koilamati, is a missionary community of the Regional Vicariate of West Bengal and North-East India under the South Kerala Province of St. Joseph, Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCD). Situated in the Diocese of Diphu, Assam, the monastery serves as a center of prayer, fraternity, evangelization, and pastoral ministry.
The mission of Koilamati was officially inaugurated on *13 November 2009* in the Diocese of Diphu. Located in the *Karbi Anglong (East) District* of Assam, the mission was established to provide pastoral care and spiritual formation to the Catholic faithful living in the remote villages of the region.
The new mission was carved out from *twelve villages of Chokihola Parish* and *three villages of Silonijan Parish, bringing together approximately **253 Catholic families* under the care of the Carmelite missionaries. From its very beginning, the mission sought to strengthen the faith of the people through regular pastoral ministry, catechesis, sacramental life, and community development.
The faithful entrusted to the mission primarily belong to the *Adivasi* and *Karbi* communities. Through their dedicated presence, the Carmelite friars have worked to deepen Christian faith, foster unity among the communities, and promote the values of the Gospel. Over the years, the mission has steadily expanded and today includes *sixteen village chapels*, serving as vibrant centers of worship and Christian life.
Named after *St. Teresa of Avila*, the great reformer of Carmel and Doctor of the Church, the monastery seeks to embody the Carmelite charism of contemplation, fraternity, and apostolic service. Inspired by her spirit of prayer and missionary zeal, the community continues to accompany the faithful through pastoral care, spiritual formation, youth ministry, vocation promotion, and social outreach.
Today, St. Teresa’s Monastery stands as a beacon of faith and hope in the region, witnessing to the Gospel through prayer, service, and the rich spiritual tradition of Carmel.
