The Malabar Province OCD is the first Indian Province of the Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCD), founded in the spiritual tradition of Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross. It has its Provincial Headquarters at Mount Carmel Provincial House, Cotton Hill, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
Brief History
The Carmelite presence in India began in the early 17th century, with foundations at Tatta (Sind) and Goa.
In Kerala, the Discalced Carmelites arrived in 1656 at the request of the St. Thomas Christians and played a major role in pastoral ministry, evangelization, clergy formation, and religious life.
To establish an indigenous Indian province, the monasteries at Carmel Hill (Thiruvananthapuram) and Thuckalay were separated from the Belgian Flanders Province and placed directly under Rome in 1936. This eventually led to the formation of the Malabar Province.
